Pelosi Announces for '9/11-type' Commission on Capitol Attack & Biden Supports It

On Monday, House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, said that Congress would establish an independent, Sept. 11-style commission to investigate the events that led to the U.S. Capitol attack on January 6. In a letter to Democratic colleagues titled, "Dear Colleague: Security, Security, Security," Pelosi said the House would also put forth supplemental spending to boost security at the Capitol.

The calls for an investigation followed former President Trump’s acquittal in his second impeachment trial, which alleged that he incited the violence that led to the attack of the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

"Investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex... and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region,” She said.

In her letter, Pelosi said, "It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened."
She added, "As we prepare for the Commission, it is also clear from General Honoré's interim reporting that we must put forth a supplemental appropriation to provide for the safety of Members and the security of the Capitol."

On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, was asked during the White House brief if President Biden would support Pelosi's Commission. In non-Psaki circle-back fashion, she confirmed he would.

Before the U.S Capitol attack on January 6, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund requested assistance from the National Guard. The request was denied. During the attack on January 6, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund asked assistance from the National Guard again; it took over an hour to approve this request by Speaker Pelosi and her Sergeant at Arms.
